The Bencao Gangmu classifies medicinal substances into sixteen categories, including minerals, herbs, grains, vegetables, fruits, trees, fungi, insects, scaled creatures, shellfish, birds, beasts, and human substances. Here, five representative herbs are displayed across four of these categories — minerals, herbs, fungi, and beasts.
