川芎

川芎素有‘血中气药’之称，是四物汤中唯一兼具行气活血之品，古人称‘头痛必用川芎’。相传其因产于四川而得名，四川都江堰（古称灌县）一带自古便是川芎的道地产区，古时亦称‘西芎’。李时珍在《本草纲目》中称其‘上行头目，下调经水，中开郁结’，道尽其升降兼备之性。

Chuanxiong is known as 'the qi herb within the blood,' the only ingredient in the Four-Substance Decoction that both moves qi and invigorates blood; a traditional saying holds that headaches must be treated with chuanxiong. It takes its name from Sichuan Province, where the region around Dujiangyan (historically called Guanxian) has long been its authentic source, once also called 'Xi Xiong.' Li Shizhen described it in the Compendium of Materia Medica as rising to clear the head and eyes, descending to regulate menstruation, and opening stagnation in between — capturing its dual rising-and-descending nature.

主产于四川都江堰（原灌县）、彭州等地，是著名‘四大川药’之一（另三味为黄连、附子、贝母），‘川芎’之名即因产地而得。

Chuanxiong is grown chiefly around Dujiangyan (formerly Guanxian) and Pengzhou in Sichuan Province. It is one of the celebrated 'Four Great Sichuan Medicines' (alongside huanglian, fuzi, and beimu), and its very name reflects its place of origin.

味辛，性温，归肝、脾经。

Pungent in flavor and warm in nature, chuanxiong enters the Liver and Spleen channels.

生川芎行气活血之力较强，多切片入药；酒川芎经黄酒炙制后，活血通络之功更为显著，常用于风湿痹痛。

Raw chuanxiong, typically sliced for use, has a strong qi-moving and blood-invigorating action. Wine-processed chuanxiong has an enhanced ability to invigorate blood and unblock the channels, and is often used for wind-damp joint pain.

阴虚火旺、月经过多者应慎用；因其行血动胎之性，孕妇亦当慎用。

Chuanxiong should be used cautiously by those with yin deficiency and excess fire, or with heavy menstrual bleeding. Because of its blood-moving action, which can stir the fetus, it should also be used with caution during pregnancy.
