The Golden Cicada Sheds Its Shell

Cicada slough is the shell shed when the cicada nymph transforms into an adult. Ancients observed the young cicada lying dormant underground for years, only to burst from the soil one day, cling to a tree trunk, shed its shell, and take flight—a sight honored with the name 'the golden cicada sheds its shell,' a metaphor for breaking free of the old husk and rising reborn.

This imagery of 'shedding' was also drawn into military strategy—'the golden cicada sheds its shell' became one of the Thirty-Six Stratagems, signifying the use of a decoy to deceive the enemy and slip away safely. It is remarkable that so small a shell could carry such rich cultural meaning.

Dispersing Wind & Clearing Heat

Light and hollow in texture, cicada slough readily travels to the body's surface. In ancient times, for exterior wind-heat conditions with fever and cough, it was often combined with mint and mulberry leaf—light, clearing herbs—drawing on the slough's quality that 'lightness can dispel excess,' dispersing wind-heat lodged at the surface.

When measles first erupts in children and the skin itches unbearably, cicada slough was often combined with schizonepeta and siler root. Physicians of pediatric medicine in ancient times regarded it as a standard remedy for bringing out rashes and relieving itching—truly a 'good friend' in pediatrics.

Benefiting the Throat & Restoring the Voice

Opera stars and storytellers who strain their voices year after year, when hoarse or losing their voice, often gargled with or drank a decoction of cicada slough—drawing on the clever notion of 'treating sound with sound.' Since the cicada's call rings clear, its slough was credited with the power to open the voice and benefit the throat.

Even today, the folk saying 'soak cicada slough in water to treat a hoarse voice' circulates among teachers and singers—this plain, experiential wisdom has not faded even after a thousand years.

Children Who Gather Cicada Sloughs

Beneath summer trees, children could often be seen standing on tiptoe, craning their necks to search the crevices of bark for translucent cicada sloughs, gathering them to sell to the apothecary for a bit of pocket money—a childhood memory that left a warm imprint in the hearts of many of the older generation.

Though the purchase price for cicada slough was modest, it was for many rural children their first taste of 'earnings from labor' during summer break. This small shell links materia medica to the most unadorned fabric of rural life.

The Philosophy of Using the Shed Shell as Medicine

Cicada slough is not the cicada's flesh but its discarded, empty shell. Chinese medicine draws on its 'form' rather than its 'substance'—the hollow, translucent shell corresponds precisely to the pathomechanism of 'wind pathogens floating superficially at the surface.' This reasoning by symbolic correspondence is a distinctive charm of Chinese medical theory.

From insect metamorphosis to medicinal use, the journey of cicada slough resembles a kind of 'transcendence borrowed through the shell,' reminding later generations that the logic of Chinese medicine often hides extraordinary wisdom within the most ordinary of things.
