Lu Rong refers to the young, unossified, velvet-covered antlers of male sika or red deer, named for their soft, nascent appearance. Ancient physicians observed that stags grow new antlers in spring and summer, rich in blood vessels and tender tissue, believing them to embody the most abundant yang energy of heaven and earth—thus ranking them as the foremost kidney-yang tonic. Throughout history, royalty and nobility steeped antler in wine or stewed it into tonics. The traditional method of sawing the antler before calcification, preserving its living, blood-rich components, continues today on regulated deer farms following animal welfare standards, without harming the animal.
Lu Rong is primarily produced in the Changbai Mountain region of Northeast China, Markam in Sichuan, and Xinjiang, with sika deer velvet ("flower velvet") and red deer velvet ("horse velvet") considered the authentic premium grades. The Compendium of Materia Medica records: "Lu Rong grows in the mountains of Liaodong and Hanzhong; it is harvested in the fourth lunar month when the antler is about to sprout, then dried in shade." Premium Northeast velvet is large, tender and blood-rich, graded by branching pattern as "two-fork" or "three-fork." Modern farming relies on enclosed sika deer breeding, with harvesting strictly timed within forty to fifty days of antler budding—too early yields weak, small velvet; too late, the antler calcifies and loses medicinal value.
Lu Rong is sweet and salty in flavor, warm in nature, and enters the Kidney and Liver meridians. It fortifies kidney yang, nourishes essence and blood, strengthens sinews and bones, regulates the penetrating and conception vessels, and promotes healing of sores. It is indicated for kidney-yang deficiency manifesting as cold limbs, lumbar and knee weakness, impotence, premature ejaculation, abnormal uterine bleeding and discharge, and developmental delays in children. As it is warming and yang-tonifying, it is contraindicated in yin deficiency with yang hyperactivity, blood-heat bleeding disorders, and acute febrile illness.
Freshly harvested antler must undergo blood-draining, steaming, and drying before it can be used medicinally. The traditional "blood-draining method" involves suspending the antler upside down and repeatedly flushing it with warm water to expel internal stagnant blood, followed by steaming to fix its shape and drying under sun or charcoal heat. The final sliced product, "antler slices," is prized for its waxy yellow color and honeycomb-like cross-section. Antler is also steeped in white liquor to produce "antler wine," valued for its warming, penetrating tonic effect.
Being warm and yang-tonifying, Lu Rong is unsuitable for excess-heat conditions, yin deficiency with fire flaring, or blood-heat disorders; it should be used cautiously or under medical guidance during acute fever or by hypertensive patients. Due to its potent tonic action, it should not be self-administered in large doses over long periods; dosage and duration must be determined by a qualified TCM practitioner following proper diagnosis, and pregnant women and children should consult a professional before use.
