"Pearl as medicine, luminous as a mirror, settles the spirit and brightens both eyes." 《本草纲目》 Compendium of Materia Medica
Born in the Oyster's Womb

The pearl forms within the belly of the oyster, born when a grain of sand becomes wrapped, year after year, in layers of nacre. Ancients likened this to 'the oyster's affliction becoming a pearl,' believing only through prolonged trial could such gentle luster be born.

Pearl diving in the South Seas was perilous work since antiquity; divers held their breath and plunged into deep water, groping blindly for oyster shells. A single round, luminous pearl was often paid for with several lives, lending the pearl in materia medica a weight of quiet sorrow.

Settling Fright & Calming the Spirit

Cold and heavy in nature, pearl settles the heart and calms fright. In ancient times, when infants cried through the night or convulsed with wind-fright, powdered pearl was often given, following the principle that 'weight subdues timidity,' soothing the restless spirit.

Palace medical records contain many accounts of pearl powder used to calm the spirit, especially for postpartum palpitations from blood deficiency, when pearl was combined with yin-nourishing herbs and prized as a treasure for restoring body and mind.

Brightening the Eyes & Clearing Film

Ground into fine powder and applied to the eyes, pearl has long been a key remedy for clouded vision and corneal film. Fine in texture and cooling in nature, it clears film and brightens sight—folk tradition's title of 'sacred medicine for the eyes' is no exaggeration.

The classical formula 'Pearl Powder' combines pearl with rehmannia and goji berry to nourish liver and kidney, specifically treating age-related dimness of vision—embodying the holistic principle that 'brightening the eyes begins with nourishing liver and kidney.'

The Southern Pearl Trade

Since the Han dynasty, the southern pearls of Hepu have been treasured cargo along the Maritime Silk Road; a shipload of pearls could fetch its weight in gold. This route, sometimes called the 'Pearl Road,' carried the trade between ancient China and the kingdoms of the South Seas.

Emperors and empresses across dynasties treasured pearls to the point of obsession; Empress Dowager Cixi's burial goods included thousands of pearls, showing that this gentle treasure carried not only medicinal worth but also the weight of power and wealth.

Pearl's Luster for Beauty

Pearl powder applied externally for beauty dates back to records from the era of Consort Yang of the Tang dynasty; court women often blended pearl powder into facial masks for its moisturizing, brightening effect—a custom that continues unbroken to this day.

Modern research confirms that pearl contains various amino acids and trace elements—this value, still cherished after a thousand years, stands as a vivid example of traditional herbal wisdom being corroborated by modern science.
