Native sulfur has long been regarded as a mineral of both medicinal and alchemical significance. Due to its pungent smell when burned and its flammability, ancient alchemists classified it among the "five metals and eight minerals," an essential ingredient in elixir preparation. Daoist texts frequently describe sulfur being combined with mercury to produce cinnabar-based elixirs, reflecting the ancient pursuit of immortality—though such alchemical practices carry significant risk by modern scientific standards, they also illustrate sulfur's unique place in traditional esoteric culture. Physicians, meanwhile, placed greater emphasis on its topical antiparasitic and detoxifying properties, using it to treat stubborn skin conditions such as scabies and ringworm.
Native sulfur is primarily found in volcanic and hot spring regions of Shanxi, Shaanxi, Henan, and Taiwan, typically occurring in crystalline form around volcanic vents or co-existing with other minerals. The Compendium of Materia Medica states: "Sulfur embodies the essence of pure yang fire-stone, bestowed with pure yin, representing the ultimate concentration of yang essence." Ancient sources collected it directly from sulfur deposits or hot spring sediments, while modern sulfur is largely extracted as a byproduct of petroleum and natural gas desulfurization, yielding higher purity and more standardized sourcing.
Native sulfur is sour in flavor, warm in nature, toxic, and enters the Kidney and Large Intestine meridians. Used topically, it detoxifies, kills parasites, dries dampness, and relieves itching, treating conditions such as scabies, ringworm, eczema, and pruritic skin disorders. Taken internally (only after strict processing and under medical supervision), it warms the kidney, tonifies yang, and promotes bowel movement. Due to its toxicity, internal use requires extreme caution, and it is contraindicated for pregnant women and those with yin deficiency and fire flaring.
The most common traditional processing method for native sulfur is "tofu-boiling": cleaned sulfur is boiled together with tofu for several hours, allowing the tofu's protein to absorb toxic impurities such as arsenic compounds. The sulfur is then removed, dried, and ground into powder—a process that significantly reduces its toxicity and is essential for ensuring clinical safety. Processed sulfur is primarily used in topical ointments and powders, such as sulfur ointment for treating scabies and ringworm; internal use is extremely rare and requires strictly controlled dosing.
Native sulfur is toxic; internal use must undergo rigorous processing and strict dosage control under professional medical supervision, and raw, unprocessed sulfur must never be taken internally without guidance. It is contraindicated for pregnant women and those with yin deficiency and internal heat with fire flaring. Even topical use should avoid large-area or prolonged application; if redness, swelling, or burning sensations occur, use should be discontinued immediately and medical attention sought.
