京帮

Beijing School (Jingbang)

The Beijing school centres on the capital; Tongrentang is its best-known representative. Traditional processes can exceed twenty steps and fifty techniques. Emphasis falls on material selection, fire control and consistent finished standards, with both court and popular lineages. Oral transmission by master craftsmen remains an important channel of continuity.

Zhang School (Zhangshu)

The Zhang (Zhangshu) school originates in Zhangshu, Jiangxi, a major southern hub for materia medica trade and processing. It developed distinctive local styles in cutting, steaming, boiling and fermentation, with tools and terminology differing from northern practice. Zhangshu’s historical role as a “medicine capital” gave the school wide influence south of the Yangtze.

School differences reflect regional experience and commercial tradition. Modern production must meet national Pharmacopoeia and quality standards while preserving distinctive features.
