张仲景所处的东汉末年疫病频发，他目睹宗族中大半人因伤寒而死，发愤钻研医学，「勤求古训，博采众方」，撰成《伤寒杂病论》，创立六经辨证体系，奠定了中医辨证论治的基本框架。后世将该书拆分整理为《伤寒论》《金匮要略》两部流传，被历代医家奉为方书之祖，张仲景也因此被尊为「医圣」。

Zhang Zhongjing lived through repeated epidemics at the end of the Eastern Han dynasty and, after losing most of his own clan to typhoid-like illness, devoted himself to medicine. Drawing on ancient texts and folk prescriptions, he compiled the Treatise on Cold Damage and Miscellaneous Diseases, establishing the Six Meridian pattern-differentiation system that underlies Chinese diagnostic reasoning to this day. The work was later divided into the Treatise on Cold Damage and the Essentials from the Golden Cabinet, revered by physicians ever since as the ancestor of all formula texts — earning him the honorific "Sage of Medicine."
