Wu Yiling
Born on 24 October 1949 in Gucheng County, Hengshui, Hebei Province, Wu Yiling is a specialist in cardiovascular disease within Chinese medicine. He first encountered research topics related to the luo (collateral) vessels and luo-disease theory as a graduate student at Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine in 1979, and continued to develop this field of study for decades. In the early 1980s, building on his research, he developed Tongxinluo, a prescription for treating cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease. In 2004 his monograph Luo Bing Xue (The Study of Collateral Diseases) was published, marking the initial establishment of a systematic theory of collateral disease diagnosis and treatment that organized centuries of scattered references to collateral-vessel disease dating back to the Huangdi Neijing, addressing the clinical challenge that Qing-dynasty warm-disease scholar Ye Tianshi described as physicians general unfamiliarity with collateral disease. The related research programme won the Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2006. He currently serves as Academic Vice President and professor at Hebei Medical University and Life Honorary President of Hebei University of Chinese Medicine, and was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (Division of Medicine and Health) in 2009. In recent years he has continued to lead his team in expanding this research, compiling Luo Xue Ji Cheng to further systematize collateral-disease theory and its clinical application.
