Shi Jinmo
Shi Jinmo, born Yu Qian and later known by the courtesy name Jiangsheng, was born in Guizhou (his grandfather having served there and in Yunnan as an official) with ancestral roots in Xiaoshan, Zhejiang. He studied at Shanxi University before turning to medicine under his uncle, the noted Anyang physician Li Keting, and became known throughout his career for his attention to integrating Chinese and Western medicine and reforming Chinese medical education — earning him a place among the "Four Great Physicians of Beijing." In his later years his students compiled his clinical experience into published volumes, including his well-known theory of "paired herbs" (duiyao) — combining two medicinal substances to enhance efficacy and offset each other's side effects — which continues to influence formula composition and clinical practice today.
