He Puren, courtesy name Shiniu, styled Kongshui, was born in Laishui, Hebei. At age fourteen he began studying under Niu Zehua, a renowned acupuncturist in Beijing, and within eight years had mastered the craft sufficiently to practice independently. In 1956, responding to a national call, he closed his private clinic to join the public healthcare system, subsequently spending decades in clinical practice and teaching at the Acupuncture Center of Beijing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, affiliated with Capital Medical University. He originated the "He's Three Reinforcing Methods of Acupuncture," combining fine-needle "micro-reinforcement," fire-needle "warming reinforcement," and moxibustion with bloodletting "strong reinforcement" into a unified system that substantially broadened the clinical scope of acupuncture. In the 1970s he was a prominent figure in "acupuncture diplomacy," using bloodletting needling to treat hypertension in visiting Japanese Prime Minister Tanaka Kakuei and his wife with immediate success, helping to raise the international profile of acupuncture. He was designated a national-level mentor for three successive cohorts of apprenticeship training, was named one of China's first Guoyi Dashi in 2009, and died in Beijing in August 2015.
