Ding Ganren, whose given name was Zeru but who was known by his courtesy name, came from Menghe in Wujin, Jiangsu, and became the leading figure of the later Menghe school, drawing on both the Cold Damage (Shanghan) and Warm Disease (Wenbing) traditions with a measured, balanced approach to prescription. He is remembered above all as a pioneer of modern Chinese medical education: in 1915, together with colleagues including Xia Yingtang and Xie Guan, he petitioned the Beiyang government for official recognition, and in 1917 formally opened the Shanghai College of Chinese Medicine — the first government-registered institution of its kind in Chinese history, which trained close to nine hundred students and shifted Chinese medical education away from its previous sole reliance on master-apprentice transmission. In 1925 he co-founded a women's college of Chinese medicine in Shanghai with Xia Yingtang, and also established two teaching hospitals in Shanghai for clinical instruction.
