Deng Tietao, formerly known as Deng Xicai, was born into a family of Chinese medicine practitioners in Kaiping, Guangdong — his grandfather in the herbal trade and his father, Deng Mengjue, a noted physician of the Lingnan Warm Disease tradition — and grew up immersed in the practice of Chinese medicine from childhood. He studied at the Guangdong College of Chinese Medicine (predecessor of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine) from 1932 to 1937, began clinical practice in 1938, and returned to the college as a teacher in 1951, later serving for decades as lifetime professor and doctoral supervisor in internal medicine at Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine. He systematically articulated the theoretical and regional characteristics of "Lingnan medicine," and in his later years co-authored, with Zheng Hong, a study proposing "Five Organ Correlation" as a replacement for the more mechanical framework of Five Phase attribution — a theory intended to more closely reflect actual clinical practice and regarded as an important contribution to contemporary theoretical innovation in Chinese medicine. Named one of China's first Guoyi Dashi in 2009, he devoted more than sixty years to clinical practice, teaching and research, and died in Guangzhou in January 2019 at the age of 102.
