Chen Keji was born in Fuzhou, Fujian, and graduated from Fujian Medical College (now Fujian Medical University) in July 1954, subsequently joining Xiyuan Hospital of the Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine (now the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences), where he became one of the principal pioneers of integrated Chinese-Western medicine in China. He has devoted his career to research on integrated Chinese-Western approaches to cardiovascular disease and geriatric medicine, systematically studying more than forty classical and modern texts on blood-activating and stasis-resolving therapy, and led the development of formulas such as Guanxin No. 2 and Xuefu Zhuyu Decoction for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular conditions — raising the effectiveness of blood-activating therapy for coronary heart disease from roughly 70% to about 88%, and building an innovative academic framework around the theory and clinical outcomes of blood-activating, stasis-resolving treatment. He was elected a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1991, and is now a senior academician of the Academy, President of the China Association of Integrative Medicine, and a recognized Guoyi Dashi, having received the Lifetime Achievement Award of the China Association of Chinese Medicine and been honored as one of China's "Most Beautiful Doctors."
