Huangdi Neijing

The Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon

Main body largely compiled in the mid-to-late Western Han (approx. 1st century BCE) · Not the work of a single author or period

The *Huangdi Neijing* consists of the *Suwen* and the *Lingshu* (also known as the *Needle Classic*). The prevailing scholarly view holds that its main body was compiled in the mid-to-late Western Han, incorporating medical knowledge from the pre-Qin and early imperial periods. It is first recorded in the *Hanshu Yiwenzhi* as “Huangdi Neijing in eighteen juan.” The received *Suwen* was re-edited and expanded by Wang Bing in the Tang and further collated in the Song; the transmission history of the *Lingshu* is more complex and stabilised mainly after the Song.

It establishes a theoretical framework centred on yin-yang, the five phases, visceral manifestation, channels and collaterals, and qi-blood. It systematically addresses etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment principles, and remains one of the primary sources of later Chinese medical theory rather than a pure formula or materia medica text.
